Why is the Strega Liquor Yellow?




Strega Liquor (Liquore Strega) is a digestive liquor, that has been produced in Benevento Italy since 1860. The recipe includes a blend of 70 herbs and spices like: Samnite mint, Ceylon cinnamon, Florentine iris, Italian Apennine juniper, fennel, and saffron. Being zaffron the key ingredient to Strega'syellow signature color. While mint and juniper instead are the most pronounced herbs in the mixture.


Strega in Italian means witch and it's not a surprise, that it was called such, being the town of Benevento, where Strega is being produced, is long considered the town of the witches as well as the gathering townfor witches around the world.

Strega is a digestive liquer and usually served after a meal straight or on the rocks. But many have incorporated the Strega into a cocktails like the famous "Macbeth #2 Cocktail" and all you need is:

  • 11/2 oz. of Drambuie
  • 1 oz Strega
and all you need to do is:

  • Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker and  must be filled with ice.
  • Shake well
  • and finally strain into a cocktail glass 
  • serve


How about a cocktail to salut the Strega like the "Strega Salute" and all you need is:

  • 3/4 oz.Green Creme de Menthe
  • 3/4 oz. Strega
  • 3/4 oz. Grenadine

 - and all you need to do is layer the ingredients in order in a shooter glass - Grenadine - Green Creme de Menthe and Strega.
